A beautifully squishy garter-stitch shawl with a distinctive kite shape, striking stripes, and endless possibilities for colour.

Techniques: Increases, decreases, stripes
Construction: Sideways kite-shaped shawl
Yarn: Fingering/Sock – three colours
Approx Yarn Requirements: Colour 1: 400yd (365m), colour 2: 250yd (229m), colour 3: 400yd (365m). Total: 1,050yd (960m)
Needles: US 6 (4.0 mm) circular needle
Finished measurements: Approx 97″ (246 cm) long × 36″ (91.5 cm) deep, blocked
Pattern includes: Written instructions, diagram, and abbreviations

A Different Kind of Triangle

Halcyon is worked sideways from just a few stitches with a centred double decrease creating its distinctive spine. Garter stitch and playful stripes keep the knitting interesting while still making it wonderfully simple and soothing.

Choose three complementary colours, three contrasting colours, or create a combination that’s entirely your own.

A Softer Neutral Halcyon Shawl

For my second version, I chose Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles in Urchin, Graphite, and Construct. The combination of soft greys, cream, and darker tones creates a more understated look with striking contrast in the stripes.
